Are dirt bikes like motorcycles?

I have been riding for 2 years and can take on most black diamonds. I only ride a CRF150 and I plan on selling my trail bike, and purchasing a CBR250. How much are dirt bikes like full fledged motorcycles? And what are the main differences?
